Musical Director - David W Ashworth.

David started playing the Tenor Horn in 1958 with Bury Silver Band, then in the Second Section, with his father and two brothers. He received lessons and instruction from Hugh Parry, the Musical Director of the famous Wingates Temperance Band and played with the Band between 1968 and 1971 before moving to Besses o’th’ Barn.

He studied Music at Lancaster University and is a member of the Lancaster University Music Society.

For what is now over 62 years, he has been very active within the Brass Band Movement, both as a player and Conductor, and has Conducted for over 45 years, and has had the pleasure of directing numerous bands throughout the United Kingdom from all sections.

David has connections within the European Banding scene and travels to Amsterdam, Holland, every September and October, to lead Masterclasses and the Annual Intensive Study Weekends with the Felison Brass Band from Velsen-Noord, Netherlands, prior to the Dutch National Championships. He is very proud to have been the Bands Professional Conductor for the past 9 years and travels to Holland to Conduct several Concerts with them.

He is a member of the Association of Brass Band Adjudicators (AoBBA) and Ex- Executive Officer. David is also a member of the National Association of Brass Band Conductors. (NABBC). After serving for over 8 years on the Ntional Executive Council

He has vast experience in adjudicating, at both Brass Band Contests and Choral Music Festivals throughout the country. In the late 1990's and early 2000's he adjudicated at the National Mineworkers Contest at the Winter Gardens Blackpool, also at the Rhyl Music Festival and numerous Air Varie and Slow Melody Contest throughout the country. The 2012 National Finals at Cheltenham, the 2013 Brass at the Guild, the 2013 Uni-brass Contest at Lancaster University, the 2014 Yorkshire Slow Melody Championships and the 2015 Butlins National Championships. In 2017, he was engaged to adjudicate the Pogson Bray Entertainment Contest in Elland, Yorkshire.

He adjudicated the 2018 Brighouse March and Hymn Contest and the Whiston Brass Festival 2018. David was the official Mentor to the Trainee Adjudicators at the National Finals in Cheltenham.

During 2019, David adjudicated the Butlins National Championships, the Yorkshire Spring Festival Preview evening, arranged by the Hammonds Band, with Roger Webster and David Hirst, and was invited to act as the official AoBBA Mentor for the Youth Adjudicators at both the Yorkshire and London Areas. He also adjudicated at the North West Association Rochdale Contest and at the Yorkshire and Humberside Association Contest at Dewsbury Town Hall. David was once again the official Mentor to the Trainee Adjudicators at the National Finals in Cheltenham.

In 2020, David Mentored the Trainee Adjudicators at the Butlins National Championships in Skegness and he was very proud to have been selected to adjudicate the 2020 London & Southern Counties Area Contest. Unfortunately due to the Convid 19 Virus, the contest was cancelled, but he has been asked to officiate next year.

Of course, it must also be mentioned that in 2020 he directed the BMP Europe Ltd Goodshaw Band to the 4th Section National Final and also Glossop Old Band to the 2nd Section National Final. A weekend we are all looking forward too.
